The Future of Our LoR Meta Stats

Hey everyone, I hope you’re enjoying your summer and finding time to play LoR and other great games while taking advantage of the good weather.

With a heavy heart, I want to let you all know that this week, our Meta Stats feature for Legends of Runeterra will be taken down for the time being. I wanted to use this space to talk through how we made that decision, why we considered it in the first place, and what that means going forward.

Before I do that, I want to assure you that we remain committed to the rest of our Legends of Runeterra app. We’ll be your trusted place for new card reveals, building decks, exploring meta decks (by our new experts Kuvira, Shugo, and Scarzig), and more. The future of LoR is still very bright and we’re looking forward to what’s come!

Next, let’s talk about why we’re disabling this feature. When we originally built this feature we had one defining goal: To give players access to stats that they wouldn’t otherwise have, allowing them to explore the meta in ways they wanted. For context, our Meta Stats feature uses data we collect from our deck tracker and crunches it, contextualizes it, and displays it in a way that you can explore stats you want.

At the beginning, no API was available and there were plenty of players using the tracker, so the information flowed. Meta Stats and other features were integrated with the game client to let us do unique things like making recommendations based on your card collection. Later on, Riot made an API available for stats of specific matches and players, and we started to slowly layer that in.

This original framework we started with allowed us to provide as much detail as possible, a look at the numbers. However, it was also built in a way that was incredibly complex and resource-intensive for us to maintain, especially when there are major changes to the game.

For example, you may remember us having issues last year when the Bandlewood expansion launched and multi-region cards were added to the game. We had to revamp and adapt a lot of our framework as a result.

lor fix em uppers splash

This year, the Runeterran cards, which created more exceptions to the traditional rules of deckbuilding, once again created complications in our Meta Stats infrastructure.

As a result, over the past month, you may have noticed that our Meta Stats have been unreliable, inconsistent, and worst of all, below the standards that we strive for as a company that takes pride in our numbers and analysis.

In an ideal world, we would love to identify the issues and solve them instantly but it’s always challenging to balance resource needs across multiple games. In a similar way that Riot has recently shifted resources and team members in Legends of Runeterra, we need to do the same. What that means is we currently don’t have the necessary resources to make the fixes in a timely manner and the only thing worse than no stats is bad stats.

As a result, we’ve decided to hold ourselves accountable and remove the feature from the Legends of Runeterra app to avoid misleading players and giving them a bad experience.

In theory, we could attempt possible “band-aid” fixes in the short term but our goal is to really address the root problems and create sustainable solutions that can adapt to major changes in the game mechanics while maintaining our standards for the long term.

We are some of the biggest Runeterra fans out there, and I myself have been in love with the game since I heard Garen and Ezrael’s banter in the beta, “ I…I didn’t know her big brother would be so…big”. Although I don’t play as much as I used to, Legends of Runeterra will always hold a special place in my heart and is my go-to card game.

ezreal lux splash lor updated

It makes me so sad that after putting thousands of hours into the game and the product we have to close down this feature. For now, focusing our resources on keeping the parts of our platform that we can support and making sure they exceed expectations is a priority.

Once we get more resources, we will return to tackling the problem of the best stats for players, rather than fragmenting our attention between the two like we are at the moment. And when that happens, like a phoenix, it will be reborn with the same high quality you saw on launch.

In the meantime, for your meta stats needs, we recommend checking out community members and other tools that are part of LoR’s awesome community such as:

Lastly, if you’re a Plus member who subscribed to access our advanced Meta Stats features, please send an email to hello@mobalyticshq.com with “LoR Meta Stats Plus Subscriber” in the subject line to see if you’re eligible for a refund. We’ll make things right!

As always, thank you for your understanding, support, and time. We love making awesome tools for gamers like us- without you, we would just be making excel sheets.

If you have any other additional questions, please ask in the comments below or feel free to reach out to me personally at my email uthgar@mobalytics.gg.

Sincerely,
Uthgar

Our Statement on Ukraine, Its Effect on Mobalytics, and How You Can Help

Mobalytics was a remote company from day one and we have people all over the world. We believe there are no borders and thanks to all the technologies that exist today, we are blessed with opportunities to stay connected and work together with the smartest and most passionate gamers from around the world.

However, during the last couple of weeks, a lot of our team members were forced to leave their homes, belongings, and daily lives behind in search of safety. The majority of them are physically safe now, but mentally they are with their friends and family members who were not able to move.

It is hard to believe that we are going through these awful times, where people in Ukraine, including our team members, need to hide in shelters to save their lives, where one “dictator” was able to ruin two beautiful countries over the course of a couple of days. One physically, another financially.

Based on the latest information, everybody on our team is safe despite some of them still being in attacked regions of Ukraine. We are with you, praying for you and your families.

gamers with ukraine banner

We are getting back on track. However, I’m extremely sad and frustrated to see that all this is happening. Being born and raised in Kyiv, Ukraine, and having my parents and some of friends still being there, I can not just sit and watch what this f*cker is doing to our country. That’s why we have started an initiative, #GamersWithUkraine.

How You Can Help

We’ve created a website, Gamers With Ukraine, that offers many ways for anybody to contribute to help end the war and rebuild Ukraine. Whether you want to donate funds, aid Ukrainian cyber forces, send supplies, find a protest, or enlist in the foreign legion, you’ll be able to find a link for doing so.

Even by just staying active on the website you will be able to:

  1. Show your support and boost the morale of the Ukrainian people. The more gamers that stay online, the bigger the impact we can create.
  2. Raise funds through playing video ads (please whitelist it within your ad blocker). ALL proceeds from these ads will be used to fund the rebuilding of the country.

So please do keep a browser tab open and active if you can, and share the site with your squadmates, duo partners, clan members, and anyone else that cares about the situation and wants to help.

Being a long-life gamer I know how strong our community is and how many of us are around the world. Together, we can make a difference for the innocent civilians that have been forced into a horrible war and help Ukraine rebuild.

I’m proud to see how the whole world united to support Ukraine against Putin. Now it’s time for gamers to unite and show our support. I believe that with your help, Ukraine will win the war and keep its independence.

Thank you for your support!

Dev Blog: Why We’re Temporarily Depreciating our Tobii Integration

Hi everyone, hope you’re doing well (and safe considering the times we’re in).

At Mobalytics, although we aren’t a team that creates games, we still strive to learn from and emulate the dev teams and companies in the industry that we admire most (afterall, we’re gamers ourselves of course!).

One of the core values that we respect most from these teams we look up to is transparency – so although the Dev Blog usually gives you a behind the scenes look at new features that are being released, we also use it as a channel of communication to maintain transparency around decisions we make.

Throughout 2021, one of our main goals was to improve the overall stability of our in-game features and overlays, such as the League of Legends companion. We wanted to emphasize this so you could count on having the features you need most when you need them most.

Before 2021, the Desktop App could vary in performance depending on the amount of traffic we were getting or other various factors. Now, we’re proud to say that outside of a few rare cases, your Live Companion should perform incredibly reliably when using its latest version.

In addition to making the Desktop App more stable, we launched:

  • New and Improved GPI
  • Minimap Jungler Timers
  • Challenges
  • Post Game Highlights

Unfortunately, while making these additions and improvements to our platform, the Tobii Eye Tracking integration became incompatible with the new infrastructure of the app. Truthfully, this is something that we did not foresee happening and we’ve learned many lessons that will help prevent cases like this in the future.

Although we tried a few potential solutions, we wanted to reach one that maintained the new standards of our app. So for now, while we work out this solution, we will be depreciating the functions related to Tobii Eye Tracking integrations, mainly within the GPI and Live Companion.

If you’re upset about this, you aren’t alone. We know that the eye-tracking features were really ****ing cool and unique. No one wants it to come back more than our team.
As you can imagine, using an eye tracker (which is a very new technology) to track our GPI performance algorithms is complex. We want you to know that we currently don’t have an ETA for fixing this as it’s difficult for us to truthfully give accurate estimates based on technical reasons. As soon as we can give you an ETA you can depend on, we will.

Lastly, if you purchased a Tobii Eye Tracker to specifically use with Mobalytics, please check out their Terms of Sales and send an email to Tobii’s support team to see if you’re eligible for a refund.

We really do appreciate your understanding and support. See you on the Rift.

Dev Blog: Smart Highlights – Identify Your Crucial Moments Automatically

We’re kicking off 2022 with our newest Plus feature…Smart Highlights!

This feature is powered by an algorithm that we’ve been working on for years and it’s finally ready for us to launch its Alpha.

Smart Highlights Highlights analyzes every action you take throughout a match and then identifies your most impactful moments so you can learn from them.

This includes game-changing clutch moments, mistakes that threw the game, and everything else in between.

In this dev blog, we’ll cover everything you need to know about it so stick around!

As a quick note, although this feature is primarily designed for our Plus community, there is a free version that identifies one clip for you instead of five if you have Plus.

Want to join the Smart Highlights Alpha and unlock a ton of other awesome features? Sign up for a free trial or subscribe to Mobalytics Plus!

Why we made Smart Highlights

Being able to clearly understand the most important plays of your matches can be difficult, especially when there’s stress and emotions involved.

It’s no surprise that it’s something that many players and teams hire coaches and analysts for.

legends of the field promo lol splash

With Smart Highlights, our goal is to make this sort of insight accessible and effective for all players.

Our feature is designed to automate this process, giving you a personal coach over shoulder that identifies these crucial moments for you.

Besides providing helpful analysis, you’ll even be able to share your best plays (or bloopers) with your friends!

How Smart Highlights work

The magic behind Smart Highlights begins as soon as you enter Summoner’s Rift.

While you play (make sure you have your Live Companion activated!), our algorithm tracks your performance and the impact of the plays you were involved in.

Every CS, level up, kill, death, and much more is analyzed with the overall context and flow of your game in mind.

Once your game ends, you’ll be brought to your usual Post Game Stats. You’ll notice that now, there is a new second tab called “Performance Overview”. Click that to find your highlights.

dev blog post game highlights click performance overview

Within this tab, you’ll see your five most important highlights (or lowlights) as defined by our algorithm. This is currently a Plus-only feature but in the future, the non-Plus version of Mobalytics will display one free highlight.

For each highlight, you’ll see its exact timing along with labels such as “Ganked”, “Gold Swing”, and “Item Advantage” to give you more context.

dev blog post game highlights clips

Once you click on a clip, you can replay it and get more details such as which champions were part of the play, their level, and items.

By giving you these moments and details, you’ll be able to understand whether you were contributing to big plays that turned the game in your favor or causing blunders that ended up leading to your team’s demise.

dev blog post game highlights watch clip

Either way, remember that everyone has good and bad plays, but not everyone learns from them. Be a player that does!

Want to revisit past highlights? You can do so by heading to your Profile and finding a specific game within your match history.

dev blog post game highlights match history

Just click the Match Details to bring up your Post Game pop up. It’s easy!

One last thing we want to reiterate is that Smart Highlights and its algorithm will be constantly evolving over time. As it’s currently in Alpha, we need your help to make it as accurate and relevant as it can be.

Based on our Alpha testing, our algorithm has shown to be very accurate but there have been some outlier cases every once in while.

If you feel like we missed a big play, please let us know. You can easily give us feedback with the form below the five clips.

feedback form post game highlights

All feedback is appreciated and will only help us make it better for you and the other players in our community!

The Future of Smart Highlights

Just like any other Mobalytics feature, Smart Highlights will continue to evolve after the Alpha and beyond!

Here’s what we’re aiming to release over time:

  • Descriptive Text for Highlights
    • We’re working on a feedback system that will give you captions that interpret the events of your highlight. This will make it easier to understand why we identified it as an impactful moment.
  • Additional Tags
    • League is a complicated game with a lot of nuances for every interaction. Over time, we’ll be adding more tags and making existing ones more relevant.
  • More Ways to Share
    • In our current Alpha, you can only Share with Twitter due to technical reasons. We plan to add the usual suspects like Reddit and Discord to give you a wider range of options.
  • Clip Submission Contests and Giveaways
    • Speaking of sharing, we’ll be having fun events, often with partners, to let you submit your highlights to win prizes! Keep an eye out for them.
  • Feature Integration
    • Attempting a Challenge? Our Highlights will point out moments where you succeeded or failed in relation to your attempt.
  • Highlights Manager
    • One convenient place to browse all your clips so you won’t have to search by individual games in your Match History.

Keep in mind that with every roadmap, things can change! Let us know which ones you’re most excited about and we’ll do our best to prioritize them.

Want to join the Smart Highlights Alpha and unlock a ton of other awesome features? Sign up for a free trial or subscribe to Mobalytics Plus!

Share Mobalytics, Win Prizes!

We know that getting better and climbing is always more fun with friends.

Since our launch, our community has been built by players recommending their squadmates, and we couldn’t have done it without you.

Our new Referral Program and sharing giveaways are designed to give back and give you rewards for helping our Mobalytics mob grow!

It’s super easy and you can give it a shot every month.

Here are some handy details you should know.

How Our Referral Program Works

By inviting your friends directly to join Mobalytics, you’ll be able to earn Mobalytics Plus subscription time and have a chance to win RP and Collector’s Edition swag!

Doing so is super easy. If you’re logged in, you’ll see an “Invite Friends” button at the top right of our platform, next to our drop-down menus.

invite friends referral button

Click on it and you’ll be brought to your Referral Program dashboard where you’ll be able to see your personal referral link, referral stats, leaderboard, and raffle results.

All you have to do is share your link with friends and have them sign up. Once you do so, you’ll immediately earn Plus and get a raffle entry.

At the end of the month, we’ll select 10 winners for prizes up to $2000 in Riot Points. The more raffle entries you have, the more likely you’ll be to win.

full referral program screenshot

In addition, every 6 months, we’ll be giving away rare Collector’s Edition boxes that contain rare loot like Mobalytics jerseys, hoodies, and much much more.

Besides sharing your link, you can also invite friends by email as well as social networks like Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit.

The leaderboard tab (shown above) lets you see all-time leaders and leaders from last month. Meanwhile, the Raffle Results will show who won RP and how much.

Now that we’ve covered the basics, here are some nitty-gritty details of how the raffle works.

Details

  1. Every time a friend uses your referral link, downloads the Mobalytics Desktop App, and verifies their account, you will gain a raffle entry.
  2. A friend using your referral link must launch their League app with the App open and your summoner account must be at least level 10+.
  3. Once your referred friend verifies their account, they will also gain entry into the raffle.
  4. At the end of each month, 10 entrants will be randomly selected to win.
  5. To see the winners of a monthly raffle, visit the Referral Page and look for “Raffle Results”.
  6. If you win, you will also receive an email from Mobalytics so keep an eye out for that.

How Our Sharing Giveaways Work

Every month, we’ll give away $1000 in RP to five winners for sharing a TFT comp.

To enter, choose a comp, whether it’s made by you or a community member, and then hit the Share button.

realistic share image

Once you’re there, select an option between Twitter, Facebook, or Reddit.

If you choose Twitter or Facebook, include the hashtags #MyMobalytics #TFTComp

Next, just wait until the end of the month. Winners will be emailed and announced on social channels.

Details

  • Winners are chosen at random and have 72 hours to respond before another winner is chosen.
  • Besides Garena, this monthly giveaway is international but prizes can only be granted to regions that accept RP PINs or Paypal payments.
  • Shares that do not have the hashtags #MyMobalytics and #TFTComp will not be detected
  • Cheaters will be disqualified and banned from future giveaways

Mobalytics Dev Blog Q&A: Challenges and GPI

Hi everyone, hope you’re doing well!

When it comes to our stats and scores, we know that clarity is vital to helping you improve as best you can.

Although we try to answer as many questions as we can from emails, tweets, Reddit posts, Discord messages, and so on, some things often fall through the cracks.

To try to make up for this, we’re creating this Dev Blog Q&A series to help answer questions from our community.

Our core topics for this Q&A will be the Challenges and GPI but if you have another question that we didn’t cover, feel free to ask in the comments!

1. Zhou: How is Skill to Focus is determined for every role?

Your S.T.F is determined by a few things. First off, we took a look at your scores for every GPI skills.

Next, we weigh them based on how important each skill is for your role. For example, Vision is a lot more important for Junglers and Supports than ADCs.

Additionally, every player needs a baseline score to be effective. After that, there are diminishing returns. Getting your Farming from 80 to 90 is much less important than getting your Survivability from 20 to 30. The latter will lead to a bigger impact in your overall performance.

2. Zhou: Why is Fighting important for Supports?

Fights are inevitable in League and since it’s a team game, it’s important for Supports to help contribute to fights. This includes 2v2’s in the bot lane, skirmishes around Dragon, and massive 5v5’s later on.

The best Supports are able to excel in all types of combat (even some Supports like Karma, Zyra, and Brand can win early game Duels!).

3. Iseedeadpeople: How can I compare myself vs a pro player?

We used to have a comparison tool if that’s what you are referring to.

You know when a ride in Disney world gets taken down so it can be made better? That’s where this feature is at right now.

In the meantime, feel free to use two tabs and do it the old-fashioned way!

4. TheBestian: Why are my GPI scores not moving after completing a Challenge?

reQ: My GPI score dropped after finishing a Challenge, how can this can happen?

This is very specific and varies from case to case. A few questions for both of you:

  • Did you take a Challenge above your skill level (one of the recommended ones)
  • Did you finish the Challenge in 3 games or 5 games? Losses, where you did poorly, can really tank the amount of improvement.
  • Did you play all games in the same queue as your GPI that you are looking to improve?

5. Luc: How long does it take for the recommended Challenges to refresh?

They should be instant upon page refresh. If this isn’t happening for you, please let us know!

6. Artemis: What skill is the most important for ADC and why?

100% Farming as ADCs tend to have delayed power spikes compared to other roles. The sooner you can get your crucial items, the sooner you can start carrying your matches.

7. Emiliano: Why there is no Challenge for objective vision?

Keep an eye out for them in the future. There are a few skill Challenges that we’re still working on to get to a level we’re satisfied with.

Irelia level 2 (LoR splash)

8. Yuuki: I’m on the losing streak but my GPI is high, what does that mean?

If I understood correctly, even though you are losing, you are getting great scores? If that’s the case, then welcome to the reason why we made the GPI.

League is a game that works hard to give you a 50% win rate, so it’s hard to understand what is and isn’t in your control.

With the GPI, we give you specific scores that help you understand what you did well and poorly. Looks like you are killing it- keep it up!

9. Alby: Why is Fight Frequency important? Isn’t it better to fight only the battles you can win?

For sure, no one should be looking to take random fights to boost this score. Fight Frequency is simply a measure of the Aggression skill, aggressive players fight more often!

The more fights you take, the better you’ll be able to recognize when you can push an advantage when you’re winning, or find an advantage when you’re behind.

10. Sin: Why is my Fighting score is capped at 78? Does it mean I can’t improve it?

This is a good question. Right now you are capped by your tier. Since League is a game where your opponents get stronger as you rank up, we needed a way to reflect that to players and allow them to compare themselves to better players.

The only players who can get the full 100 are Challenger players.

11. Merry: Can you combine my GPI from all game modes to see the overall performance?

We can but we currently don’t. Most people play differently in different queues and it would really mess with the accuracy of the GPI if we did that.

Do you not feel that way about your own performance habits?

12. Mati 422: If I see other people’s GPI, why I can’t see their Challenges?

In the future, we will be adding a way for players to show what Challenges they have achieved and players can check other players out.

If you have any specific ideas of what you’d want to see for this, let us know!

LeBlanc Level 2 (LoR reveal splash)

13. Sad_desk_meal: Why are some Challenges based on team performance when I can’t affect how others are playing?!

This is the hard part of League, it some aspects will rely on teamplay. We tried as much as possible to keep Challenges within your window of control, but some of them, like Baron, will require some help from friends.

14. Lightbringer: Can you explain why some Challenges have more than 1 target?

Good question. When you are starting off and learning a skill, it makes sense to focus on one aspect of it. But as you develop as a player, it’s important to develop your ability to be good at multiple things during the course of one game.

As players get better in League, they aren’t simply just good at one thing. We added extra objectives to cover that phenomenon, but also to give players more challenge!

15. Emiliano: My Teamfight score is super low, but I’m playing Support and I usually just follow my ADC, how I can improve that score without leaving my ADC for too long alone?

This is another good question. Sometimes a Support has to know when to roam to be at the fight and when to be babysitting. The best Support players are really good about balancing that.

16. Emiliano: What does it mean to participate in the tower kill. Will it count if I hit it just once?

Yes it should! (Provided you hit it in the same time frame it died).

That’s all for now! Feel free to ask more questions in the comments below. To activate a Challenge now, just head back to Mobalytics.

Dev Blog: Mobalytics Challenges, A New Way To Improve Your League Skills

One of our core missions at Mobalytics is to help all gamers get better at their favorite titles.

As such, we’ve created an all-in-one-companion that strives to empower different types of League players in their individual journeys.

For example, Players that want to dive into stats and analytics can do so with our Gamer Performance Index (GPI) and Profile.

Summoners that want to master their favorite champion or research new ones can do so with the Tier List and Champion pages.

For those that want in-game scouting and insights, we created the Live Companion and Overlay.

Our latest feature, Challenges, is designed for the players that like to learn by doing.

Dr. Mundo crop for front page

In this dev blog we’ll cover how Challenges work, our philosophy behind the feature’s development, and much more so stick around!

Note that this is the first version of Challenges and we have a lot more coming in the near future.

BTW, if you can’t wait and want to try them now, just go straight to our Challenges page.

Jump to a section:

So…what are Challenges?

Challenges are a new way for League players to test themselves on fundamental skills by accomplishing a list of in-game goals.

These fundamentals are Aggression, Farming, Fighting, Objectives, Survivability, and Vision, which are six of the eight skills in our Gamer Performance Index (GPI).

Mobalytics recommends Challenges based on a player’s role, rank, and their strengths and weaknesses as a player.

Top lane Challenges

Once a player accepts a Challenge, they must successfully fulfill the Challenge’s conditions in three out of five of their next games.

Once they do so, they’ll see their skills improve! If they fail, that’s totally okay – they can either try it again or switch to another Challenge.

Why we made Challenges

If you’ve been with us for a long time, you may remember that the GPI used to give you advice from our Challenger experts based on your scores.

Although many players in our community liked Challenger advice, we realized that it could sometimes be difficult to concretely translate the advice in-game.

final advice

Challenges represent an evolution for our GPI that replaces Challenger advice with Challenges devised by our Challenger experts (that was a challenging mouthful).

They allow us to more effectively guide players in-game rather than needing the players to interpret the advice into action.

Another major reason why we created Challenges was to give League players a new way to measure whether or not they’re getting better.

When it comes down to it, there’s a lot of losing involved in League. Even the “best” climbers in ranked often hover around a 55% win rate, which is only slightly better than a coinflip.

We all know the feeling of popping off and playing a nearly perfect game but you still manage to lose.

leminem mvp

On the flip side, we also know the feeling of playing horribly but still getting carried to a win.

Challenges give you tangible goals that allow you to perceive whether or not you played well outside of the coinflip of a match’s actual result.

In tandem with GPI their scores, a player can more easily measure their growth as a player as opposed to simply focusing on win/loss streaks and their rank.

Just take a look at some feedback we received from one of our Closed Beta testers:

challenges testing quote

“Challenges work great, I was just telling a friend how my GPI has changed and how I’ve noticed an improvement in my past matches. Could just be a lucky streak, but by focusing on Challenges, my chart went from this to this.”

You love to see it! The changes and growth in their fundamental skills are clearly illustrated by their graph.

Lastly, the third main reason why we created Challenges was due to players having ranked anxiety and preferring to only play Normal matches.

By completing Challenges within the context of Normal games, a player can still get a sense of accomplishment and growth without the label of a rank.

How Challenges Work

Let’s dive into the nitty-gritty of how Challenges actually work.

If you’re signed into a Mobalytics account, this section of our dev blog can act as a guide to attempting your first Challenge!

First off, understand that you can activate Challenges from multiple places throughout the Mobalytics platform. Two examples are from within the GPI or at the main Challenges page.

In the screenshot below, you can see what this looks like from within the GPI:

Mobalytics Desktop App Challenges full

Just hover a card to see more details about the Challenge, here’s a quick look at its various components.

challenge components

Many of these are self-explanatory. Based on your rank, role, and GPI skill scores, you’ll be given Recommended Challenges that would give you the most bang for your buck in terms of seeing the most immediate positive impact in your gameplay.

Let’s take a look at the Gold level for Top laner Duels and break it down further.

top laner duel gold challenge

Gold Duels Challenge:
  • Win 2 or more duels
  • Have 5 or less deaths
  • Get at least 6 CS per minute

As you can tell, although the focus is on the Duels score, the Challenge still requires you to keep your number of deaths and CS score in check.

This is our way of making sure that even if a player is using Mobalytics to improve their skills, they will still maintain their expected responsibilities within the context of what they should be doing for their team.

The last thing we want is for you to derail your team’s potential success by tunnel visioning on completing your Challenge!

If you’re down to give it a shot, just hit the big Activate Challenge button to get started! In order to complete it, you would need to fulfill the listed goals in three of your next five matches.

Once it’s active, you’ll have a status counter during the duration of your Challenge.

Challenge status

Before your match, this counter will be displayed within the Live Companion’s Pre Game to remind you of your goals. After your match within the Post Game, the counter will be updated with a breakdown of how your match’s performance compared to those goals.

Teamfighting post game result

Games with a success will be marked in green while fails will be marked with red.

challenge win loss status

If you manage to get three wins, congrats, you did it! Based on how well you accomplished the Challenge, you’ll also be given a star score.

By completing a Challenge with a perfect three games in a row, you’ll be given the max of 3 stars. If you needed all five games to succeed in three matches, you’ll be given 1 star – for four games, you’ll earn 2 stars.

3 star challenge

So if you’re a completionist (we’re looking at you Overcooked players), you can go back to earn every star possible!

Based on the Challenges you complete and the stars you’re given, you’ll be able to progress to higher Challenge levels.

The higher ranked Challenges will of course be increasingly more difficult to ensure you improve. Remember Duels for Top laners?

Let’s jump ahead to see how Diamond compares to the first Gold example we looked at.

top lane diamond duels challenges

Gold vs Diamond Duels Challenge Comparison:
  • Win 2 or more duels (Gold) –> Win at least 3 duels (Diamond)
  • Have 5 or less deaths (Gold) –> Have 4 or less deaths (Diamond)
  • Get at least 6 CS per minute (Gold)  –> Get at least 7 CS per minute (Diamond)
  • Win at least 50% of your duels (Diamond)

As you can see, not only do previous goals become harder, but the number of them will also increase over time!

Quick Tips and Tricks

Now that you understand the basics of how to activate and progress through Challenges, let’s cover some useful functions you should know about.

How to explore all Challenges

Recommended Challenges will always be close to your current rank and skill level, but if you want to switch to something drastically easier or harder, you can do that!

To do so, just head to the filters section at the main Challenges page.

all challenges filter

Once you’re there, check the box “Show all challenges” and you’ll be able to sort by any rank, GPI skill, or ranking.

How to pause or cancel a Challenge

By clicking on “…” you’ll be able to see more options for a specific Challenge.

Challenge options

Pause is useful for when you want to switch between game modes (such as from ranked to norms). We recommend sticking to the same game mode until a Challenge attempt is complete to maximize your results.

If you’re having a lot of trouble with a Challenge or want to work on something else instead, you can deactivate a Challenge with the Cancel button to open up space for a new one.

Lastly, if you aren’t doing so hot, perhaps with an 0-2 start, you can press Restart to start anew. Keep in mind that going on a 3-0 run is possible though!

The Future of Challenges

As we mentioned in the intro, this is just the first iteration of our Challenges. We’re already working on some big changes that will be coming in the near future and further down the line.

  • Overlay Integration
    • Within a month or so, you’ll be able to see your Active Challenges and your progress for them in real-time while you play!
    • This will complete the loop of Challenges guiding you before, during, and after your matches.
  • Partner Challenges
    • As you know, we have awesome partners and collaborators from streamers to esports teams.
    • Keep an eye out for some guest events where you can complete Challenges for awesome prizes…anything is possible!
  • Class Challenges
    • For our first version of Challenges, we tried to make the set of goals within roles as relevant as possible.
    • Of course, we understand that there is a wide range of playstyles within a role, such as tank vs duelist, so we’ll be scaling Challenges to eventually accommodate those nuances.
  • Champion Challenges
    • Within every role, there are always some off-the-beaten-path champions that break the conventions of what you’re used to. For example, Pyke and Ivern offer much different playstyles than what you’d typically expect.
    • As such, our goal is to eventually have champion-specific Challenges that cater to every champion’s unique playstyle.

What do you think of Challenges? Let us know in the comments below! To activate a Challenge now, just head to Mobalytics.

Dev Blog: Sometimes You Have to Go Backward to Go Forward!

You know that feeling when you are playing a new game and you want to get to the end fast so you can do all the cool stuff, and then you get there and you realize it feels like something is missing?

Like if you are playing Path Of Exile and you take a league starter build and roll with the guide, but you get to the end game and you realize you don’t really understand how the skills work and you have been using the wrong support gem set up.

Or, if you have been playing LoL and you picked up a new champ, and after a ton of games you realize that because you didn’t carefully read the ability descriptions, you don’t really know how it works and have been casting your skills in the wrong order.

That’s how we felt last year. We released so much cool sh*t and we wanted to be everywhere: League, Valorant, TFT, and LoR.

We succeeded AND made a lot of players very happy. We moved fast and got a lot of stuff out there, and we aren’t done yet. There’s more stuff coming.

What’s Coming Next

Here’s a sneak peek at the awesome stuff we have coming soon! Note that these are designs and may be subject to change before their final release.

  • New and Improved GPI: We have been wanting to do this for a while, but it was significantly more complicated than we thought. After untangling our original Frankenstein, now everyone can enjoy a much cleaner way to assess their skills and see their progress.
    • In general, it’ll be much easier to track the ups and downs for your individual skills. A big thing to notice here is that Progress Tracking is now within the GPI! This will make more sense later on in the article.

New GPI Fighting Skill Breakdown

  • Challenges and Quests: At Mobalytics we have a philosophy: Learn by doing. Why should that be any different in the way we help you improve at League? You can watch a million guides and not learn, the same way you can watch Bruce Lee do a one-inch punch a million times and you won’t be able to do it.
    • You may be worried that the Challenges may distract you from your ultimate goal – winning. You may also be worried that it may distract your Mobalytics-using teammates. We have taken both of these great points into account and want to assure you that your goals will only help you win.

Duels Challenge final edit

  • Upgraded Live Companion (now with ARAM support!): Last but not least, our flagship Live Companion is of course getting more upgrades. This includes improved speed and stability, an OP in-game overlay with helpful insights and notifications, and finally…ARAM support.
    • Who doesn’t want to make the stress-free environment of ARAM even easier to get into? This one has been a long time coming so we are excited to get it into your hands.

Aram Live Companion teaser screenshot

Further down the line, we’ll also be implementing useful tools like jungle timers and CS trackers so hold tight!

I can’t reveal more than that right now, but this will definitely be one of our biggest updates yet. It’s about time we were able to start releasing the stuff we have been working hard on for LOL.

Let’s Rewind Though

Remember how I said something was missing? Sometimes you find that you have moved too fast and it’s always the fundamentals that suffer.

That’s where we found ourselves at the end of last year. At that point we had gotten tired of seeing “Mobalytics is pretty awesome… When it works” said to us in many different ways.

We plastered that message on our walls (or in this case our Slack channels) and got to work.

We went in and built and rebuilt everything we have. For those of you engineers reading this, you know how deep spaghetti code and cache memes can go, so it wasn’t pretty.

BUT, here we are now – and we feel ready to give you the new and improved, the better, the faster, and the stronger.

Unfortunately, a few sacrifices had to be made to ensure the integrity of the stuff that really mattered.

For now, we will be depreciating the following features:

  • Dashboard
  • Progress Analysis
  • Player Comparison

In the coming months, they will either transform or be replaced by something bigger and better in the future. It’s sort of like when a theme park has to close a ride.

It’s a bummer at the time, but eventually, it comes back in some badass new way, with a brand new animatronic or new theming, that makes you forget about its previous form.

Want to try out our new tools?

If you’re a fan of the above features, they will rest easier knowing that they were loved. Reach out to us, help us figure out how to bring them back more powerful than we ever imagined.

We promise that it will all be worth it in the end and the new things that we’ll be debuting will more than make up for it in the meantime.

By the way, if you’re a Plus member we’d like to invite you to try out our new tools and give us feedback! If you’re interested, please send an email to amine@mobalytics.gg, with the title “Mobalytics Plus Tester – Summer Update”.

That’s all for now! Our goal is to do more dev blogs more often this year (I feel like we have said this before, but we really mean it this time!). Who knows, we might even try out a Discord Stage so you can ask us questions live!?

GLHF, and see you next time friends.

Mobalytics 2020 Rewind: Highlights and Lessons Learned

What a long year, huh? With so many things happening all over the world, I feel that many of you, like me, are relieved to have gaming as a safe home to retreat to. Our favorite shared pastime is technically immune to what’s been happening in the outside world.

If you think about that statement a little more, it has stood the test of time: our virtual haven has always provided us with a place to retreat to, immerse ourselves and wander, or for those of us who are more competitive: with clear goals and feedback towards those goals.

During this pandemic, others have discovered or even re-discovered why gaming is so special, and we are glad to welcome them as gaming continues to tell a different story than my youth: having a mentally stimulating past time is a good thing and not some sort of brain rot my generation of parents would have you believe.

However, I would not say that we are completely unaffected. Before the storm, we were content to just sit home and play. Now somehow, we start to feel the missing things- the lack of options.

If you are like me, or most humans, we find ourselves often egged by our fears: fear of missing out, fear of unforeseen consequences, fear of losing something we once had.

This is the evolutionary survival default state. In our safe world (compared to 10,000 BC!), without constant forced opportunistic thinking and retraining our brain, it can be hard to get out of such cycles.

This doesn’t just happen in life, but everything we do – including our ladder climbing!

Luckily we have been fortunate as a company to be in an industry that people turn to in times like this. Luckily we are also fortunate enough to be already remote from day one, and could easily adapt to the times.

braum level 2 splash

Of course, we have gatherings and in-person meet-ups and board game nights whose absence makes us sad, but for the most part, we are grateful to continue doing what we do.

In a time where our loved ones and many other people may be struggling, it’s a good time to be grateful and do what we can for those who are less fortunate.

And we at Mobalytics are more grateful than ever for the community of amazing people we have built.

If you are on our Discord, you will see some spreading of holiday cheer, and even if you are not we have some cool stuff coming up like a relaunch of our Collector’s Edition for those of you who missed out the first time around!

The last year has been intense for us – we went from a one game company to four games, each with its own set of challenges and player needs.

Ambitious Elf Jinx (LoL splash)

One day we hope to be in many more games, tackling those challenges as they come with confidence that we can do it.

It hasn’t been easy to give each community the bold innovations and features that we want, but slowly we are getting there and learning more and more about your wants and needs, whether that’s a single game or playing multiple games using our desktop app.

I am excited to say that next year, it will be a year where we start strong and focus on the LoL upcoming season.

All those requests about the clunkiness of our GPI have not gone unnoticed so stay tuned for some action!

P.S. What are you playing this holiday season!?

To travel even further back in time, check out our 2019 Year in Review video!

In the rest of this article, we’ll talk about everything we released for each game with insights and lessons learned along the way.

If you’re interested in a particular game, just click it below to jump there.

League of Legends

We are really proud of how far our Desktop App has come this year. Basically, if you aren’t using it – what are you waiting for?

With the Overlay features and the context-sensitive information delivered where you need it and when you need, it’s hard to go back to playing without it!

In 2021, be ready for us to keep making it even more and more difficult for you to play without it!

Everything we released for LoL

  • Live Companion
  • LoL Overlay
  • Tobii Integration
  • Scouting Grounds 2020
  • Season 11 Items
The Live Companion

We want this to be the ultimate tool to help you before and after your game!

Overall, we basically combined elements from the Pre Game and Post Game and combined them with new elements to create one cohesive experience.

Automatic Build Imports

We’ve recommended builds for a while but we wanted to make it easy for you to get what you needed without having to check the Champion Pages and then copy everything manually.

With a simple click, you can import recommended items, runes, and Summoner Spells, and you can even set them to auto-import if you trust us that much.

Playstyle Badges

If you were a pro player, you’d have a staff of scouts to help you understand the tendencies of the enemy team, and help you understand your own.

Badges aim to quickly highlight these playstyle nuances before and after your game.

In the second half of the year, we also took your advice and tried to make them more understandable with a coloring system.

Live Companion (new colored badges)

Matchup-specific Advice

We built a community of champion experts (known as Ascendants) who wrote a ton of advice based on your role’s matchup

For example, if you’re an ADC and Jhin player, you would not only get general advice for Jhin, but you’d also get Jhin vs Ashe, Jhin vs Caitlyn, Jhin vs Jinx, and so on.

Champion Combos

If you’re a fan of fighting games where you go into the training mode to learn combination sequences, you probably enjoyed this one.

We wanted to help new players understand how to learn the crucial mechanics of a champion from their first game, such as how to weave in auto-attacks and order abilities properly.

There’s a lot more to come very soon for combos, so keep an eye out!

Team Comparisons

League, at its core, is an experience designed for 5v5. We know that a lot of you 5-stack with your friends, especially with the arrival of Clash.

This feature is designed to help you quickly understand how the two teams in your match compare, from their power spikes to head to head stats.

The LoL Overlay

This one was a big one and one of our most exciting yet. Our goal for this one was to equip you with the best tools to help you perform optimally within your matches.

We took a lot of inspiration from pro play broadcasts, and we hope you felt that while using the feature.

Player Stats and Insights

We know that there’s a lot of info to take in before a match so this allows you to access all the playstyle badge insights and more from your Live Companion. whenever you need to during your game.

LoL Overlay Tab + Q Ashe Game

Use it to understand which enemies are less likely to ward, which are on hot/cold streaks, and more.

Game Overview

This one is one of our favorites! First off, you’ll receive useful notifications whenever someone hits a significant level (like 6 for their ultimate) or when they hit a big item power spike (like Trinity Force).

LoL Overlay Tab + W events screenshot

This tab will also quickly see how your team is doing in terms of gold to gold lead (similar to watching a pro game), and you can even see these comparisons on a lane by lane basis.

Matchup Info

Similar to Player Stats and Insights, this tab allows you to access valuable insights for the matchups in every role.

LoL Overlay Tab + E Leona MatchupLoL Overlay Tab + E Leona Matchup

This includes power spikes, ability cooldowns, player vs player stats, and matchup-specific advice

Tobii Integration

This year we joined forces with Tobii to bring new metrics that are measured using an eye-tracking device

The collaboration improved our ability to help players master key skills like map awareness, avoiding tunnel vision, and fight preparation

We even worked with pro teams like Misfits!

If you want to dive into the most cutting edge tech for eye tracking in gaming, learn more with our guide for using a Tobii Eye Tracker and Mobalytics.

Scouting Grounds 2020

For the second year in a row, we worked with Riot as the official data partner of the Honda Scouting Grounds event. The coaches and scouts from LCS teams used our tools to evaluate the upcoming talent of North America

We provided Power Rankings and live stats for the event to help fans follow along.

Scouting Grounds 2020 Site screenshot

Overall, the event was a success despite limitations due to COVID.

There’s a ton of promising talent coming up in the scene from this year’s Scouting Grounds – keep an eye out for Niles who will be starting for Golden Guardians!

Season 11 Items

Riot shakes up League of Legends during the Preseason to build up hype for the next year. This year’s major change was a massive revamp to the item shop.

Season 11 Items feature

Although there were some items that returned, many were changed or removed in favor of new additions.

Mythic Items add a ton of gamebreaking mechanics that really do change the dynamics of a match compared to past seasons, so we want you to be as prepared as possible as we head toward Season 11.

Teamfight Tactics

Here, we continue the theme of making our Desktop App indispensable for anyone wanting to play.

For TFT we feel like the easy to navigate portions of the guide (which are now super-powered by awesome videos) that can be applied to your game state make it easier than ever to get what you need when you need it.

At the end of the year, we launched our my comps page, which is going to be the first step allowing you to really play TFT your way!

Everything we released for TFT

Launched Set 3 + Set 4

The two TFT Sets for this year were Galaxies and Fates!

For both sets, we created a database of the champions, items, and synergies, and had constant meta recommendations for team comps and champ/item tier lists.

Our goal is to always be your reliable resource that provides the most up-to-date tools to help you stay on top of the TFT meta, so expect us to do the same for future sets!

TFT Overlay

TFT is probably one of the best games for using an Overlay since you have time to think between rounds. This offers us time to provide in-depth insights while you play.

We spent a lot of time thinking about the different things that TFT players need and want most while they’re in-game…questions like what does this item build into? What composition should I build with these units? When should I roll?

Our Item Cheat Sheet makes it easy to quickly see the different item recipes.

You can access all of our recommended meta comps and get in-game tips for each comp such as formations, how to manage your economy, and which items to target at your carousel.

If you have Plus, you can indicate which comps you have and receive recommendations based on those!

Expert Video Guides

For those of you that wanted to go further in learning how to play a comp optimally, we began creating Expert Video guides as a part of Mobalytics Plus.

Now, you’ll get an in-depth lesson from our TFT experts that includes gameplay footage and more.

My Comps

Although many players come to our site for recommendations, we know that part of the fun of TFT is making up your own stuff, so this tool was created for those of you that love to theorycraft

My Comps gives you a way to save your created comps to a library where you can access and edit them.

TFT My Team Comps Example

For those of you that want to tinker with our recommended comps, you can edit those as well.

The best part is that you can import your comps to your Overlay to use them in your game.

To learn more, see our My Comps guide.

Legends of Runeterra

Legends of Runeterra captured our hearts on launch, and we wanted to make something for players that made them feel at home in card games but also brought something new to the table.

Our profiles and stats combined in a way that made this possible. As we continue our journey of iterating this to be perfect, you can bet we will continue to provide enthusiasts with the content that they are looking for.

Everything we released for LoR

Decktracker + In-Game Overlay

LoR Deck Overlay screenshot

We’re proud to have created the first deck tracker/overlay for LoR!

It’s a crucial tool if you’re looking to play optimally as it keeps track of your decklist, all the cards that have been played by you and your opponent, and even gives you probabilities for drawing your remaining cards

The deck tracker is also integrated with your match history in your profile, offering you more ways to track your progress.

Global Leaderboard

Every competitive game needs a leaderboard!

LoR - Leaderboard

This provides an easy way to find the best players from around the world, track their ups and downs, and even access their profiles if they use our deck tracker (many of them do!).

Player Profiles

One of the cool things about card games is seeing the different identities players form. Some become known for aggro, others control, and a few may be known for playing everything well.

Swim LoR profile

Player profiles allow you to get an inside look at the decks/regions/champions a player uses and their performance/activity with those decks.

If you see something you like, you can even get the code and import it to your library.

Meta Stats

Although you can always get a feel for what is meta based on experience and discussion, it’s always best when you have the stats to back up your hypotheses.

Bilgewater Demacia Meta Stats

Our goal with Meta Stats was to allow players to easily understand which deck archetypes, cards, and region combinations were performing the best.

At first, our sample size was derived from our Deck Tracker but it has since grown tenfold as we’ve gotten access to a portion of Riot’s total games since they opened up their Match History API.

Mulligans + Advanced Filters

These were additions that were part of the first major update to the Meta Stats.

Mulligans help you master your opening hand with stats to help you understand what to keep and what to reroll.

Advanced filters were created to give you more granularity in exploring our stats, for example, you can now filter by specific ranks (say only Diamond and Master), or by specific regions (like Korea or Europe).

You can even filter by specific time frames (past 3 days vs past week) and sample size thresholds!

Riot Integration

We’re always looking for more ways to make Mobalytics feel like an extension of your game experience. By integrating with Riot’s client, we made it much easier to use our site.

For example, you can now immediately see how many cards are missing from your collection when you’re looking to try out a deck you find in the Deck Library.

Another perk is that you can directly import the decks from your Deck Manager to your game client!

Glimpse Beyond

2020 marked the beginning of our partnership with Glimpse Beyond, a writing team lead by Swim, that’s composed of the top players in LoR including some that have held the #1 spot on the ladder.

inspiring mentor splash

We work with them to give you a daily dose of new LoR articles each week, giving insights on the latest decks, tournament reviews, and card reveals.

Valorant

Everyone is super hyped about Valorant, it’s got style and came in guns blazing.

We were a little slow off the start line, but right now with our super high-quality guides and MasterClass with T1, we feel like anyone can come in and learn what they need to do to dominate the game.

On top of that, they can easily check the profiles and other hard numerical information on the site to see where they are in their journey.

Debut of the site

As a brand new game, and probably for many from Riot’s playerbase, the first tactical shooter, we wanted to make as many resources as possible to help new players learn the game.

In our first version we released:

Agents

Valorant agents page

Here, you can find info on every agent, from their abilities to tips and tricks for each map.

We used a similar format as our LoL Champions page and tier list by assigning difficulties to each agent to help beginners understand how complex they are to learn.

Weapons

Valorant Weapons page

Don’t have time to head to the shooting range? Here you’ll find spray patterns, stats, and more for every gun in Valorant.

We’ve been really impressed with the balance of the weapons so far as everything really seems to have a viable time and place.

Maps

Valorant maps page

Allows you to interact with maps so you can easily study the different sites and areas of interest.

Video Guides

Last but not least were our video guides that provided ability lineups for every agent on every map to help you get the most value out of them.

Our experts are constantly experimenting and adding more so be sure to check back whenever a new map is released.

Player Profiles

Following a similar pattern as LoL and LoR, we created a player profile to help you learn about yourself and other players.

yami valorant performance overview

You’ll be able to find familiar things like daily activity and match history, but also some stats that are unique to Valorant, such as weapon stats, agent stats, and map stats.

T1 Master Class

We’ve worked directly with pro teams before, but usually to help them prepare their pick and bans in an upcoming match or to scout young and upcoming talent in Scouting Grounds.

This was the first time that we worked with pros to create a Master Class to help Mobalytics players improve!

Brax, AZK, and fRoD are big names in the FPS scene so it was awesome collaborating with them to create 29 in-depth Valorant lessons.

Closing Thoughts

Whether you read the whole thing or only tuned in for your favorite game, we appreciate you spending the time with us.

Have an awesome holiday season wherever you are and hold tight, because 2021 is going to be much better.

Good luck, have fun, and see you see you soon.
